What are the advantages of an FBI background check?

An FBI Identity History Summary Check enables individuals, under federal law, to review, amend, correct, or update their personal records. While this summary offers useful insights into an individual's criminal history, it is not intended for employment or licensing verification. For background checks related to job applications or licensing, it is recommended to contact the appropriate State Identification Bureau.

How does FINRA utilize my fingerprints for background checks?

As a federal-level Authorized Recipient, FINRA collaborates with the FBI to conduct a thorough background check using the fingerprints submitted. Typically, your firm will receive the results within 72 hours of your fingerprinting appointment.

How do my fingerprints get sent to FINRA?

As a certified Electronic Fingerprint Submission (EFS) provider, PrintScan electronically transmits your fingerprints directly to FINRA. However, if you choose to submit fingerprints manually using FINRA's fingerprint cards, your firm must send them directly to FINRA. Keep in mind that FINRA does not accept fingerprint cards submitted by authorized channelers like PrintScan.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) provides Live Scan fingerprinting services, a digital method for capturing fingerprints electronically and transmitting them directly to FDLE for background checks. Live Scan technology is faster, more accurate, and more secure than traditional ink fingerprinting, making it the preferred method for processing state and federal background checks.

What is the Originating Agency Identifier (ORI)?

The ORI (Originating Agency Identifier) is a unique code assigned by the requesting agency to applicants undergoing background checks. This code serves two key functions: it specifies the purpose of the background check and directs the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) on where to send the results.

When fingerprints are submitted electronically via Florida Live Scan, the background check is usually processed within three business days. Before scheduling a Florida Live Scan appointment, applicants must obtain the ORI number directly from the relevant agency to ensure accurate processing.

What Are EFT Files for ATF eForms?

An EFT file (Electronic Fingerprint Transmission) is a digital file that contains an individual’s fingerprints and demographic information. These files are formatted according to the specific requirements of the requesting agency.

What is an Apostille and Why is it Important for FBI Background Checks?

An Apostille (pronounced ah-po-steel) is a certification that verifies the authenticity of a document for international use. If you need an FBI Background Check for official purposes abroad—especially in countries that are part of the Hague Convention—an Apostille may be required to ensure your document is recognized as valid and legitimate.

The Hague Convention, an international treaty, mandates that member countries accept Apostilled documents as legally valid. This is particularly important for matters involving international travel, work visas, residency applications, and intercountry adoptions. Many countries within this convention will not accept an FBI Background Check unless it has been properly Apostilled.

If you are traveling, working, or adopting from a foreign country, check whether an Apostille is necessary. Typically, the requesting country will inform you of this requirement. If you're unsure, you can review the list of Hague Convention member countries or consult the relevant consulate or embassy before scheduling your fingerprinting appointment to ensure compliance with all document authentication requirements.
